The Importance of a Strong Core

Good Evening Readers,

'Without a strong foundation, you'll have
trouble creating anything of value'
Erika Oppenheimer

I believe that this quote sums up the importance of today's message, which is running is not just about the legs.

So I have had another good week of training, and am seeing the results of my hard work, slowly but definitely there.  I think that the better weather is really helping my running, but not my driving!  I was driving home from work the other day and almost crashed, as was appreciating the beautiful purple and yellow tulips at the side of the road.  However the sun being out just makes you smile, and makes me want to get out and run rather than hide away in the gym.

Round up of week:

Tuesday - Interval Session on treadmill.
My legs were still painful from Saturday's LSR, I managed 10 minutes warm up and 4 and half sets of 3 minutes work 60 sec rest but then had to stop.  The intervals had been at 9, 9.2, 9.4, 9.6, 9.8.

Wednesday - Strength and Conditioning at home
Good stretching and finished off with rolling and tennis ball to glutes.

Thursday - Run which turned into intervals outside
As the sun was shining  I wanted to go outside, but as my upper left leg was STILL sore from Sat LSR I wasn't sure what I would get done.

Started off with cramp threatening to set in the left calf, then into left hammy.  So after 10 minutes of easy pace, I decided to pick up the pace so I could really lift my legs up and stretch them out.  This helped and before I knew it I had ran for 8 minutes.  I took a 90 second walk break and then head back off on another 8 minute interval.  This one felt ok and went quite quickly.

After another 90 second rest break I started the third set of 8 minutes, this one was harder and as the legs tired, my form dropped and the tightening started to set back in mainly in the glute/IT area.

I started to do cool down but was too tired and walked home.  I started a new regime today which starts with showering from waist down in cold water... OMG the shock, thought my heart was going to go.  How do people do ice baths??  I followed this by Hot bubble bath... much nicer.

Saturday - LSR
This run was harder than last weeks, however it was faster even with a few walk breaks.  I made it to 10k in 1:15:45 and managed to do 7 miles in total - 1:28:10.  Was really happy with the progression, and takes me a step closer to the half Marathon on 1st May.

One thing increasing my distance and speed is telling me is that my core really needs working on.  As soon as my legs are tired, my body isn't strong enough to hold me up.  It is a dreadfully wrong misconception that running is all about the legs, without a strong foundation, you'll have trouble creating anything of value, or in our sense with out a strong core you will struggle to go further.

So that is me for now, I am going to concentrate on making sure I do my SnC this week.  I still have not drunk any wine, and I am really missing it now.  Still only 27 days to go.  On Easter Sunday I will enjoy a nice cold glass of Prosecco, only to have to not touch a drop from Monday onward as it will be two weeks to the Half Marathon in Milton Keynes!

Much Love
FBB
