Who Stole My Fitness?

Hello Readers!

Today's topic for discussion, is who has stolen my fitness??  Please will you bring it back!

Last week I left you on a high of determination, and the thought of building back up, well this week the big bad wolf definitely managed to blow my house back down!

Here is a run down of my week:

Monday:
Strength and Conditioning Session at home.  I have detailed my SnC below, however depending on whether I am at home or in the Gym and whether it is too close to a full on running session I may miss certain ones out.  On this day the only one I missed out was No. 3.

1.  Theraband side steps (Blue) 4 sets of 8 each side
2.  Theraband  Shoulder YTW's (Blue) 2 sets of 10
3.  Leg Press Machine 3 sets of 8 @ 17.5kg
4.  Dumb bell chest press (3KG) 3 sets of 8
5.  Reverse lunge with dumb bells (3KG) 3 sets of 8 on each leg
6.  Dumb bell single arm rows (3KG) 3 sets of 8 on each arm
7.  Calf Raises 2 sets of 10 on each leg
8.  Seated overhead dumb bell press (3KG) 3 sets of 10
9. Dog 2 sets of 6 pulses on each leg
10. Russian Twists using dumb bell (3KG) 2 sets of 16 (8 to each side)
11. Abdominal Crunches 2 x 15 reps

Tuesday:
Interval session at the gym on the treadmill:

Warm Up: 2 minutes walk 8 minutes easy run
Intervals: 4 x 5 minute work 90 seconds rest - Pace - 7m/km, 6:50m/km, 6:40m/km, 6.30m/km
Cool Down: 8 minutes easy run  2 minutes walk

The session started off quite hard on the legs, the quads and glutes felt very heavy but eased up as I went on.  By the last set it was hard on the breathing and I was glad when it was done.

Wednesday: Rest Day

Thursday: SnC minus 1,3,5

Friday: Short Run 5.93km 45:03 (The plan was 15 minutes easy effort, 20 minutes steady effort, 10 minutes easy effort.)

So I had intended on going to the gym to do this session as it was cold and had been snowing.  Also I had pulled a muscle in the lower right part of back at work.  However having taken the dog for a walk and realised once you got into a steady pace it wasn't too bad, I decided to go outside.

It didn't feel too bad to start with, the legs were OK and it was quite slow and steady so breathing felt fine.  About 10 minutes into the warm up, I think I had unknowingly increased my pace so by the time I started the 20 minutes of steady effort and having to speed up I was already tired.  After 10 minutes in I was done!

On the upside I had messed about with my watch before hand and managed to work out that yes it did have a lap key, and yes you could see the speeds of each lap as long as you turned off the automatic lap function and turned on the lap key.  So I played about with this feature as I carried on doing walk/run.  (update to Garmin review below and on review page)

So whilst I had learnt something new about my watch, I was disappointed with my running, even though I had increased the pace, it was nothing like what I used to be able to run at, and it is scaring me that such a slow pace is exhausting me so quickly at present.

Saturday: SnC minus 3

Sunday: LSR where the only part of this abbreviation I managed was the slow part! 5.83km 47:29

So the day started (about 10am) with me being brought scrambled egg on a flat bread in bed with a cup of tea!  Yum!  Then Rob went off to do his run, but I decided that I would do the shopping and housework first otherwise I wouldn't feel like bothering once I had returned from a long run.

Once I had finished the housework, I did a scaled version of my SnC and some mobility exercises and rolled to try to loosen up.  I was hoping that this would help the problems I have been getting with the heavy and tight feelings in my legs to start and would over all improve my run.

I was feeling quite limbered and ready to go, and off I went, starting slow, there was definitely an improvement to the legs, but they still didn't feel fresh.  I also felt tired, and it was very cold and wet, dark and miserable which I guess doesn't help your mood.

I managed 20 minutes before I needed to stop for a walk break, also realising that I had forgot to put my lap key on so I turned my session off and restarted with lap key enabled as I knew I would be doing lots of walk/run parts and wanted to see the speed of the runs properly.

I walked for 2 minutes and then started to run again, however my legs were tired and so was I.  I tried a gel, but it made no difference whatsoever other than tasting good.  I managed the 2 minute walk followed by 8m run, 2m walk, 5m run, 1.5m walk, 6m run, 1.5m walk, 48s run... I was done!

I had to walk a fair distance home, and it was snowing, I was really cold and wet and miserable.  I felt like I was going backwards instead of building up.

My thoughts at the time were:

My body needs to get used to all of this extra training having been so hit and miss over the last few months.  The last week my food and drink intake had been very bad. I did too much in the morning and then went straight for the run having been some time since breakfast. Maybe the clever thing to have done would to have eaten lunch and taken a rest before going out.

Not long after I arrived home I suffered an incredibly painful bout of IBS, and maybe that was the reason I had been so exhausted.  Who knows?

So as you can see, whilst I have been trying to work hard all week, I really feel like I haven't achieved anything.

Tomorrow (Monday) I have a seminar at the gym, it has been 5 weeks since we started the 12 week challenge, and the only prize I will be winning is the putting weight on!!  I would love to say this is due to muscle, but no, it is due to being bad again with food.  Still, I have 7 weeks left to try and do something positive with the challenge.

Garmin VivoActive HR Review Update:
The VivoActive does have a lap key, and you can see the results for each of these laps and therefore you can do intervals and see what pace each was at.  It still doesn't seem to have the facility to set in it a warm up time, intervals and cool down time so it buzzes at you so you have to watch the time for yourself, but deserves a slight increase in score.
8.5/10

Well that's about it for this week, I am feeling quite down, and would love to hear from any of you that have gone through similar times, please comment and let me know your stories.  I need a kick up the bum, OH and if you are the person that has stolen my fitness, please return it ASAP.

Much Love
FBB
